The historic city of Granada in Andalucia, Southern Spain has inspired many artists and writers over the centuries. This beautiful city, the last stronghold of the Moors in Al Andalus, is full of beautiful architecture and scenery. Everybody has heard of the impressive and lovely Alhambra Palace with its backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains but here there is also the old Moorish quarter, the Albaicin, where every corner provides another composition to paint and the fascinating gypsy quarter, Sacromonte, with its cave houses. Artist Margaret Merry, who has lived in Southern Spain for ten years, is one of the latest to capture the essence of this city with her beautiful watercolors. It is a wonderful place to live but a hopeless place to earn a living particularly if you are an artist. Here in Andalucia the unemployment rate is over 30% and the economic situation desperate. Even if you can sell paintings getting paid by the galleries is difficult. I am owed what for me is lot of money from galleries which have sold my work but will not pay me because they have used the proceeds to pay their rent, electricity bill or somebody else. What would the collectors think if they knew that the artist who painted the work on their wall that they paid good money for had not received a cent for it?
The answer is to go global and the best way to do this is to promote your work on line. This takes a long time. I started seriously trying to sell my paintings on the internet two years ago but only in the...
