The grand houses of the old quarter of Granada, the Albaicin, are called Carmens. These lovely buildings are usually surrounded by beautiful gardens hidden by high walls and have superb views of the Alhambra on the opposite hill. Most carmens are private houses and you cannot enter their gardens to paint them. This carmen, La Media Luna, in the Placeta Nevot though makes a perfect composition from the corner of the square with the lovely building rising above the walls , the tall trees in the garden and the vigorous climbing plants over the entrance.

Born in Chelmsford, England. I grew up in Falmouth but lived and worked as an artist in Truro from 1970 until I moved to Spain. I have been painting since I was 2 years old but I also have a love of nature, my animals, classical music and dance. In 2002 I moved to Spain and now live in a cortijo near Alhabia, Almeria, Southern Spain. The scenery around my home provides endless, beautiful subjects for landscape and seascape painting and I get inspiration from the dramatic landscapes of Andalucia and the old cities, towns and villages which I usually paint in watercolour.
