A tinao is a structure typical of the architecture of La Alpujarra, which forms an arch across a narrow street creating a small tunnel and enabling a room to be built above to create extra accommodation space and link buildings. They are most common in the villages of the high Alpujarra in Granada province but can also be found in the villages of La Alpujarra Almeriense. This one, off Calle de Rosa in the village of Instincion near where I live, offered a perfect composition for this watercolour.
Born in Chelmsford, England. I grew up in Falmouth but lived and worked as an artist in Truro from 1970 until I moved to Spain. I have been painting since I was 2 years old but I also have a love of nature, my animals, classical music and dance. In 2002 I moved to Spain and now live in a cortijo near Alhabia, Almeria, Southern Spain. The scenery around my home provides endless, beautiful subjects for landscape and seascape painting and I get inspiration from the dramatic landscapes of Andalucia and the old cities, towns and villages which I usually paint in watercolour.
