TRABAJANDO EL ESPARTO
This lady was at the traditional crafts fair at my neighbouring village of Terque last Sunday. She was demonstrating the old craft of mimbre - making products from esparto grass. I asked her to pose for me as I thought she would make a wonderful subject for a portrait. I love the colours of her traditional costume, the character in her face and the working of her hands. Here is the finished pastel.

Born in Chelmsford, England. I grew up in Falmouth but lived and worked as an artist in Truro from 1970 until I moved to Spain. I have been painting since I was 2 years old but I also have a love of nature, my animals, classical music and dance. In 2002 I moved to Spain and now live in a cortijo near Alhabia, Almeria, Southern Spain. The scenery around my home provides endless, beautiful subjects for landscape and seascape painting and I get inspiration from the dramatic landscapes of Andalucia and the old cities, towns and villages which I usually paint in watercolour.
